Activity Lesson 2

I could exchange 30 min of social media a day, for 30 min of learning Arabic. This would exchange short term entertainment for long term personal and professional development.

Propose a change you could make to one of your habits, that would reduce your time preference from high (instant gratification) to low (delayed gratification) time preference. It could relate to any aspect of your life (financial, diet, exercise, relationships or education).

I feel like the diet example is exactly one of my issues. I will force my self to go workout just so that I can justify going out later that night with my friend to have some beers and hangout. By the time I do that I not only consumed more calories than I burned I also spent more money than I probably earned for that day!

My proposal would be investing at least (i.e. minimum) 30 minutes per day everyday on completing all the courses here on IvanOnTech to acquire everything I need to know about blockchain programming, web development with Javascript and Node.Js, and etc…

I am going to take one course at a time, and at first I will only take the six entry-level courses, and once I complete all six courses, I will then upgrade my enrollment for further studying. In the meantime, I will readjust my life to a new routine and spend less time on leisure activities as of now.

Every day. Earn the dawn.

I have a job that compresses time in a day for a week.
That is, I work long hours in a day, so I can work less days a week.
This gives me three to four days off a week, despite working what is classed as a full time job.

On my off days I train 1 to 3 hours over 2 - 3 separate workouts.
I’m very, very strong, and can still run distances when needed.
I even eat and sleep as optimally as I can.
I study in some way almost all of my days off with audiobooks and podcasts mainly, with study such as this structured into my day.

I learn how to learn and I learn how to train, by using the most bang for your buck methods I can find.
I keep learning what of that to keep doing, and what to let go of.

Yes, I’m saving money. Enough for my investment into crypto to really mean something soon…I hope. But that’s why I’m here. To make sure.

But the most important thing was getting the most destructive, toxic people out of my life.
I was unable to achieve any of this until they were out of my life. Don’t blame them. Ever. I chose to stay, and once I worked this out I chose to leave.

I’m not great.
But I’m pretty certain I’m on the right path.
Find something that inspires you, and memorise it.

"Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

I could spend less time on social media and tiktok which adds no value to my life and rather spend that time upskilling myself and generating additional income for more financial freedom.

  • This past year I have gradually changed my paradigm into taking much more of earnings and investing it (mostly crypto/stocks) and now that I’ve learned a lot more, especially through a successful buddy, my relationship has changed with the money itself. I find myself way more interested in investing than buying things I might want but don’t really need. It’s been great as I’ve never had this relationship before. I am hoping I can take what I have learned from this and apply it to fitness. I have gotten far along before, but then after a few months, I tend to fall off a bit. Perhaps I can find a way to parallel both habits and synergize them. At the very least, my buddy and I are trying to improve our accountability measures on our weekly gym regimens so that we hit our minimum of 3 times a week. I like what the article just prior reminded me about the psychology of our inner reward system and it can help to be more aware of this after we earn a lot or have a good workout followed by the need or want to spend/eat. That awareness will help one be more mindful and hopefully make better decisions going forward.

Answers:
One change would be to eat significantly less meat (to improve health and save money) and splurge very infrequently on higher quality/organic meat (i.e. say a nice steak). So you would have meat less often, which would push out your meat eating time preference and delay gratification from eating meat.

I could wake up an hour earlier each morning and workout. I justify not working out because my job takes up a lot of time and if I spent an hour a day working out I would lose time spent with kid and wife. Or wake up earlier while they are sleeping anyway and lose no time each day but actually gain time by living healthier longer life.

Over the last 2 years I was waking up at around 8:30 – 9 and somehow I didn’t feel that I manage to do many things. I felt that the day passes fast and sometimes I felt the need to compensate with going to sleep late in the night (but at these hours it is not very productive after a long day at work).
So I decided to take this course and learn as much as I can about blockchain. In order to do that I decided to wake up every morning at 6:30 – 7. This way I can understand and assimilate the information better.

Eating more leafy greens. Very few people wake up each morning wanting a nice fresh salad for breakfast. Or they get the mid-afternoon munchies and think ‘you know what sounds good right now, a head of cabbage.’ In reality, the best thing for your health longevity are leafy green vegetables. No matter what fad diet you are on, EVERYONE agrees that leafy greens are extremely beneficial for human wellness. Yet no one puts it into practice because leafy greens are on the very bottom of the taste pallet. There is absolutely no instant gratification. I relate to this, and strive to force leafy greens in my diet whenever possible, but dang I wish pizza, fries, and pancakes weren’t so tasty.

Spending more time planning meals and buying groceries deliberately instead of impulsively buying what looks good at the time or ordering take out every night. Not only would this improve the general quality of my diet (future self) but would also help me spend less! (also future self).

I used to go out very often to socialize. Either clubbing or dinner, obviously the current lockdown helped a lot but the big change has been to discover the big bubble of fiat and how I need to be prepare for the big change to blockchain world. Having that in my mind every day definitely help me to say No to spend money in parties.
