Activity Lesson 2

Since the beginning of the new year I have reduced some aspects of my diet from high time preference to low time preference. One thing is that I drastically reduced my sugar intake and eliminated stocking soda in our house. The thought process behind this is to reduce my calories today to that I have a better feeling body (less or no muscle inflammation) and I lose weight. These results are two aspects of low time preferences.

I have been spending way too much time sitting at the computer the past few month as I have been in school online. I need to get more physical activity in my day, and doing it in the morning would be ideal because I get busy or lazy in the middle of the day and it doesn’t get done.

Making equal time of Netflix to exercise. With a desk job sitting most of the day and then plopping down in front of Netflix, while instantly gratifying, not conducive to getting into shape. I’ve actually started watching Netflix while on the treadmill recently. Long term gratification to come, hopefully.

I do happen to eat more garbage food the more I work out, I am giving myself that satisfaction of spending on my desire after working harder, the results aren’t any better, I am not wealthier because I spent more.

Propose a change you could make to one of your habits, that would reduce your time preference from high (instant gratification) to low (delayed gratification) time preference. It could relate to any aspect of your life (financial, diet, exercise, relationships or education).
I will spend 30 to 60 minutes each day to learn a new skill that will help me be financially independent.

I could get more lasting benefits from my workout by not canceling out the benefits by immediately eating after the workout. Also reduce the need to “treat myself” after every pay period.

A lot of people put exercising more on here, I actually already do a good job of that already and sometime push too hard resulting in injury that ends up hurting me both during exercise and even outside by reducing energy and willpower to some extent (it’s annoying to be active when you have a nagging pain). The instant gratification I could give up is pushing too hard to reach some near term personal gym record and take care of my body better and overall work more efficiently for long term.

One change that i could make from high to low time preference would be my gambling. Whilst i am a profitable gambler( everything is online, with detailed statements, so it is impossible to lie to myself about ROI), the money that i earn from gambling is usually spent quickly, even frivolously, as i see it as “easy money” that has required minimal investment ( although this is not strictly true, it took a number of years study and financial loses before i was profitable on a long term basis ). At least a percentage of those funds may be better directed towards a more long term investment, such as crypto or precious metals. A more delayed method of profit generation would, hopefully, lead to a more delayed gratification preference, and the accumulation of value over a longer time frame.

Making my ow coffee instead of buying it at a coffee shop. The extreme difference in cost would add up over time. This income could then be saved and invested.

If I could stop driving for 50 kilometers everyday to and from work, and pick a taxi for 2 dollars to the nearby train stations, travel by train 50 kilometers to and from work everyday, that will save me the money for 2 gallons of fuel. By the end of the month I will have a lot of money that can pay for my internet bill and other utilities, and also pay for my online courses which will add more value to my life in the future.

I have a huge to do list ,with working ,renovating, studying and being present in my relationships .
It all seems overwhelming at times but I find that if I get a little something done each day that by the end of the week I can see progress and get to check off items on my list and make room for the next items

One habit that I would like to change is to restrict viewing consumption of videos on the internet. Often times, viewing things not adding too much value beyond enjoyment and relaxation after work. One way of mitigating the time consumption is to set an alarm for one hour block of time to watch for relaxation and then begin working on more beneficial tasks.

I did my degree via remote learning. I did it in fits and starts and would do a lot of procrastinating and end up doing a lot of studying before an assignment or exam. When I joined Ivan on Tech Academy, I took Ivan’s advice and I study every day - even if just for 20 minutes. But invariably once I get going, I carry on for an hour or more. It works like a dream!

I could replace time spent watching different youtubers speak of where the bull market will take us this year and experience instant excitement (investments done and can not afford any more), and spend more time completing courses in the academy building my future

I think getting back to a daily meditation would be beneficial for reducing time preference of several things. The main two that come to mind are finance and education. To remind myself daily that fortunes weren’t made overnight and that no one learned and mastered any worthwhile skillset in a day, week or month would help with adopting a low time preference.

I’ve recently given up 4 of my internet subscriptions in order to save money and invest in crypto!

I will sleep at 10 pm every day and wake up at 6:50 AM. I will also do at least 15 minutes of cardio Mon-Fri. I will read 5 minutes about crypto and wealth creation every day. I will meditate 5 minutes every day.
