Activity Lesson 2

I could use 1 hour every day to learn something from which I can benefit in the future, for example how to code.

One change I have been trying to make gradually for some time now is how my family is fed. I am trying to balance the time and effort it takes to work with real food that is healthy versus fake convenience food that I know will eventually make my family sick. I would rather spend an hour every afternoon maybe doing other things, but I am learning to love cooking a lot and now it is becoming a win win for short and long term gratification. I find you will always love things more as you improve your mastery but it is a challenge to overcome the hump of the learning curve.

I tend to become obsessed with topics for a few weeks / months and then burnout because I would have spent little to no time thinking or doing something else. A few example are : Real estate, writing a book, understanding Finance and crypto. (I spend countless hours on reading but also… Youtube watching videos that all say the same thing) My energy levels decrease over time until I feel so stressed and overwhelmed that I don’t want to do anything anymore and go through bursts of anxiety.

I aim at being more measured and constant in my efforts, this could involve :

  • Defining a fix amount of time per day and stopping when done
  • Fixing a limit for Youtube

Adopting a slower pace of learning will most likely increase the sense of accomplishment and allow me to do this on the long run.

I am in the habit of not finishing things that I start. I guess I enjoy the thrill of starting something new (instant) but I get bored once I know what I’m doing. Instead of sticking it out in order to achieve the delayed reward, I often replace the old thing with a new thing. In essence, chasing the instant gratification. So if I change the habit of giving up on things, then I will reduce my time preference to a much lower level.

The biggest change I’ve already endured has been in the crypto space. Buying in with high expectations of all time highs and profits. While there is a lot of volatility, that doesn’t mean it works in your favor. Now hodling and staking have reduced my time preference dramatically.

I could have fasting days. That would help me build up discipline for delayed gratification which would translate into more savings.

I need to worry more about my heath than filling my body and mind with instant gratifications, whats the point of gaining all this wealth if you have bad health.

One of the things i would change is that i would use social media maximum 5 minutes per hour during the day so i dont get distracted from all the things i am trying to work on and grow on. I believe most people nowadays dont really know how much time we waste scrolling browsing or simply just using social media, when we could be using that time efficiently otherwise.

Start planning educational activities and verifying the progress on a quarterly basis instead of weekly or monthly. This will give me more time to generate bigger progress and focus more on the activities themselves. This also will lessen the negative effect of having a worse day.

Propose a change you could make to one of your habits, that would reduce your time preference from high (instant gratification) to low (delayed gratification) time preference. It could relate to any aspect of your life (financial, diet, exercise, relationships or education).
-Instead of trying to keep up with crypto news almost real-time (instant gratification), allocate a certain amount of time each day for crypto news. This will help to 1.) control the amount of time spent on this activity, 2.) force me to prioritize what news and news sources are really the most valuable and worthwhile. 3.) allow time for other important activities.

I want to drink a superfood shake and I want to drink it now. I could go to the store and buy a packaged shake and drink it now (high time preference). But, instead I’ll plant some seeds and water them regularly to grow what I need to make many shakes in the future (low time preference).

Well, because of Covid-19 I am currently working from home, right next to my kitchen. In other words, the temptation to eat is always there. I have a habit of snacking during the day. If I were able to reduce the amount that I snack during the day, in addition to the exercise that I am regularly doing, I would be able to increase my overall fitness level.
