RandomX Audits; 118.000 US $; 40 contributors

What’s the current USD value of all ‘Work in Progress’?

Research post-quantum strategies for Monero:
Quantum Computers could theoretically circumvent several of Monero’s security and privacy features in the future if they are made. Algorithms that could do this are already known, such as Shor’s algorithm (which breaks security based on the discrete logarithm problem) and Grover’s algorithm (which could be used to (forge blocks).
Retroactive deanonymization puts today’s Monero users at the hands of tomorrow’s quantum or classical adversaries. If practical quantum computers that can break Monero’s encryption arrive at any point in the future, then users’ lifelong transaction history will become public for ingestion by the AdTech industry, stalkers, criminals, and governments. It is irrelevant which party publishes a deanonymized copy of the Monero blockchain first - the universal evaporation of privacy is irreversible.
This research will:

  • study and simulate the threats listed above to assess Monero’s vulnerability to quantum computers

  • valuate post-quantum cryptography scheme candidates to create a road map for hardening Monero against quantum adversaries

  • openly communicate the results for a variety of audiences

  • A proposed idea is discussed by the community and the proposer makes the necessary changes.
  • When the core team sees that consensus is reached, the request is merged with the CCS Proposals repository on Monero’s Gitlab instance. That is also when funding begins.
  1. Which ‘Completed Task’ had the highest budget? What was the USD value (at the time, hint: read the proposal) and how many contributors were there?
  • It is still the RandomX audits.
  • The needed USD value was 118 000 USD and the XMR/USD rate was set at 85. According to Coingecko, the XMR price was around that level at the time. The task raised 1400 XMR = 119 000 USD according to that rate.
  • Under Payouts, it says Funds Awarded: 1293.8.
  • There were 40 contributors.
  1. What’s the current USD value of all ‘Work in Progress’?
  • It is 1861.8 XMR, which at the moment is 202 191 USD.

I looked at Feather wallet.
The first milestone is reached and paid, but currently it has no contributors.

According to the announcement post, the current GUI wallet is demanding on system resources due the use of Qt Quick (I don’t have the knowledge to elaborate on that), and the CLI wallet is, obviously, for advanced users. So, the team took inspiration from Bitcoin Electrum wallet and adjusted it for Monero, as well as added nice features:

  • Integrated XMR.to (use Monero to pay in Bitcoin);
  • Integrated Tor;
  • Integrated exchange rate calculator;
  • Freeze UTXOs you don’t want to spend. While this is useful for transparent cryptos (like in Samourai wallet), I’m not sure why is such feature needed for Monero.
  • Create sub-addresses;
  • The wallet makes sure you don’t re-use addresses;
  • Multi-signatures.

User-wise, it doesn’t say much in the proposal, but the features are shown nicely in this video.

At the moment, it is being developed on Linux and Mac. Windows is planned in future.
As I understand, the current GUI will also get some functionality of Feather.

Overall, Feather wallet will make life easier and enable more functionality for the average user, which will attract more users to Monero.

The Monero Community crowdfunding Service is designed to grow and improve the community by accepting projects and awarding XMR to participants who complete these tasks. Once an Idea is considered and found to have merit, the Core Team and the community explore and refine the ideas. Those that emerge as acceptable and worthwhile are granted and moved into the funding required phase of the project implementation. The highest budget for a completed task so far on record was awarded at 1400 XMR, which at todays value would be roughly $185,206.00 and had 40 contributors. The poject was RandomX audits and it was the audit funding in reviewing the new POW algorithmic code.
The Monero Outreach Program, which has completed some of their work, is more of a grassroots project than a technical one. It asims to increase awareness, adoption, understanding and development of the Monero blockchain and its privacy and financial benefits. Big and important tasks involved in the proliferation of use of monero as a means to transact include press relations, merchant training and awareness, the construction of and maintenence of a Monero calendar, a directory of merchants that accept monero, updating tool kits and posting on social media and so on.
Lofty goals to update the Monero documentation into a host of languages, the organization and scheduling of events, coordination of press and all the while utilizing a grassroots approach to gaining more adoption are critical for the success of any emerging technology. To date, just a third of the 110 XMR awarded has been paid out. Funds are to compensate the various contributors including local language translators, writers, and community builders.

Monero Atomic Swaps implementation funding

the project aims to build pieces of software that would allow the end user to perform cross-chain, trustless, P2P, atomic swaps between Monero and Bitcoin. This project seems very important considering that the South Korean government, as well as others I’m sure, will be cracking down on centralized exchanges that offer access to privacy coins like Monero. Cross-chain atomic swaps will offer non-centralized, non-KYC access to privacy coins from other cryptocurrencies.
