Monero Announcement - Reading Assignment

  1. The thread was published on April 25 2014 and has been read 4632663 times

  2. There are seven members in the core team

  3. XMR benefits over ZeroCoin by using one-time keys and ring signatures. In comparison ZeroCoin’s disadvantages are the cryptography doesn’t have the maturity of research, also trust is required that the RSA private key that initiates the accumulator is destroyed, and also the entire economy is obscured not just sender/receiver identities so can’t tell if the protocol is compromised

  4. XMR benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches by using trustless and decentralized cryptography as opposed to trusting servers to behave correctly. Also XMR ring signatures mix outputs not transactions, so does not require waiting for other users to mix with and also can send arbitrary amounts.

1.) When was the thread published, and how many times has it been read?
The thread was published on April 25, 2014 - 12:38:50AM. Read 4632655 times.

2.) How many ‘core team’ members are there?
Monero has 7 ‚core team’ members.

3.) What are the stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches?
The ZK environment allows an anonymity set that includes everyone in the network because the validity of an output can be proven without knowing the corresponding public key until it is spent. The largest risk is that this is recent research-level cryptography that hasn’t been subjected to years of cryptanalysis, so exploits may emerge down the road. Monero Ring signatures are much simpler and more mature, with many peer-reviewed papers published over more than a decade.

4.) What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?
XMR’s ring signatures are far more secure and convenient than CoinJoin because they mix outputs not transactions. This means a transaction doesn’t involve waiting around for other senders to mix with. Nor is a user restricted to mixing only if others are sending the same amount. Arbitrary amounts can be sent at any time without anyone else’s participation. This feature makes a timing analysis of the blockchain useless.

2.- Tere are 7 Core Team members

3.- Monero uses ring signatures that are more proved cryptography and reduce the possibility of security leaks; and one-time keys.

4.- Cryptonote is similar in one way to CoinJoin mixing, the quality make the difference and its related with a change in its protocol, which it allows a self independent mixing. It mix the outputs instead of the TXs, this is how ring signatures protect sender and receiver and by the other hand, one-time keys make TXs unlinkable. This 2 factor brings an amazing control of its founds and anonymity to the user.

  • A mix of outputs is safer than a mix of transactions.
  • The CoinJoin method requires a trust in the master nodes, XMR does not.
  • There is no need to wait for similar transaction amounts.

Ring signatures and one-time keys

Monero provides decentralized and trust less mixing. It does not need to trust operators or masternodes.

3.- Ring signatures are simpler and more mature (time tested, proven) methods, ZKP scheme is relatively new, it uses new research-level cryptography that hasn’t been subjected to years of cryptanalysis.
4.- Not needing to trust the operators of a CoinJoin transaction and, more importantly, XMR mixes outputs instead of transactions.

  3. Ring Signatures are simpler, more matured and tested. Probability is higher that exploits are found for Zerocoin and ZKP-based approaches in the future. If the ZK system is compromised, then an attacker can spend non-existing coins.
  4. XMR mixes outputs, not transactions, this gives the mixing process higher anonymity and user experience since there is no need to wait for other transactions. In addition, the ring signature protects anonymity even if mixing node would be compromised.

  3. What are the stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches?
It states ring signatures are simpler and more mature, having years of documented use.
With ZKP you must trust that the RSA private key will be destroyed. An attacker could also continuously spend coins with false proofs.

  4. What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?
With CoinJoin you must trust the operators. XMR’s ring signatures are also far more secure and convenient than CoinJoin because they mix outputs not transactions.

  3. What are the stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches?
Two of the main features of CryptoNote are ring signatures that mask sender identities by mixing and one-time keys that make transactions unlinkable.

  3. What are the stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches?
    a) Ring signatures are much simpler and more mature, with several papers published.
    b) RSA private keys must be trusted to be destroyed by the generating party.
    c) The cryptography used by ZeroCoin is not as well proven, whereupon exploits can arise leading to destruction of Coin’ ecosystem.

  4. What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?
Ring signatures mix the outputs, not the signatures so you don have to wait for other signers, makes it more efficient.

  3. The “ring signature” is a more mature and tested approach while ZKP is a rather new, mostly untested (at least not for more than a decade as ring signatures) one. Also, there is a great risk that if the ZKP system is compromised, there is no way to find it out because as the name suggests it’s based on Zero Knowledge.
  4. “Traditional” mixing services always rely on a third party. The CoinJoin inspired Darkcoin (now known as Dash) is relying on the master nodes to carry out the mixing but if those are compromised then anonymity is pretty much gone. Also, ring signatures are more secure because it’s mixing the outputs and not the transactions

  2. Monero has six core team members.

  3. An advantage that Monero has over ZKP-based approaches is that XMR uses a cryptography that’s much more tried and proven over ZKP’s research-level cryptography which could potentially have flaws found and exploited at some point.

  4. Monero says that their mixing service is inherent to their protocol and doesn’t require trust in an outside party unlike CoinJoin.

3. What are the stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches?

It is decentralized compared to ZKP-based approaches and provides privacy through one-time keys and ring signatures.

4. What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?

-Ring signatures are far more secure and convenient than CoinJoin because they mix outputs not transactions which leads to reduced waiting time for other senders to mix with.

-Users aren’t restricted to mixing only with those identities that transact in the same values.

-Various amounts can be sent at anytime without the need for anyone else’s participation
