Monero Announcement - Reading Assignment

  1. When was the thread published, and how many times has it been read? April 25th, 2014, 12:38:50 AM, It’s been read 4,627,286 times as of the time accessed by me.
  2. How many ‘core team’ members are there? 6 Members
  3. What are the stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches? “Ring signatures are simpler, automatic for the user, and vetted via peer review over more than 10 years. The largest Zerocoin and ZKP risks are that the technology is relatively new and hasn’t been been subjected to years of crypto analysis. Potential exploits are unknown. Other issues involve trust with accumulator initiation and maximum anonymity renders the entire economy obscured, not just the sender or receiver, and if the system is compromised, an attacker and continuously spend coins that don’t exist while the damage is hidden from everyone. These are the inherent risks.
  4. What are the stated benefits over Conjoin-based approaches? While XMR is qualitatively similar to mixing implementations like Coinjoin, the departure from Bitcoin differences are that XMR uses new cryptogragraphy to provide trustless and decentralized mixing of superior quality. Anonymity is much higher and is more secure as outputs are mixed, not transaction. Arbitrary amounts can be sent at anytime without anyone else’s participation.

  1. How many ‘core team’ members are there?
  • Seven core members (Riccardo “fluffypony” Spagni, luigi1111, NoodleDoodle, smooth, tacotime, Franciso “ArticMine” Cabañas, othe)
  1. What are the stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches?
  • CryptoNote aims for a different balance through the dual layers of privacy provided by one-time keys and ring signatures.
  • Ring signatures are much simpler and more mature, with many peer-reviewed papers published over more than a decade.
  1. What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?
  • Unlike the “CoinJoin” mixing method, CryptoNote mixes outputs not transactions. This means no other senders need to be participating with you at the same time or with the same amounts. So the anonymity set is increased to almost infinite. Greater anonymity is paid for however.

3. What are the stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches?
The ring signatures on Monero are one time keys are more time tested technologies.

4. What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?
When using Monero you don’t have to trust another party to do the Coin Mixing part.

  1. The thread was published on April 25th 2014 at 12:38:50 AM and it has been read 4628364 times.

  2. There are seven core team members, Riccardo “fluffypony” Spagni, luigi1111, NoodleDoodle, smooth, tacotime, Franciso “ArticMine” Cabañas, and othe.

  3. Monero uses ring signatures which are much simpler and more mature, with many peer-reviewed papers published over more than a decade. ZKP uses the RSA private key which must be trusted to be destroyed by the generating party, and obscures the entire economy, not just sender/receiver identities so that if the system is compromised an attacker can continuously spend coins that don’t exist using false proofs. This damage would be hidden from everyone due to total blinding so at any given time its not possible to know if the network has already been compromised. Monero doesn’t have this issue by using ring signatures and one time keys.

  4. Monero uses new cryptography to provide decentralized and trustless mixing of superior quality. With mixing services like CoinJoin, you have to trust the operator. Monero’s ring signatures are also far more secure and convenient than CoinJoin because they mix outputs not transactions, so a transaction doesn’t involve waiting for other senders to mix with. You are also not restricted to mixing only if others are sending the same amount. Any amount can be sent at any time without others participation, so this makes timing analysis of the blockchain useless.

Ring Signatures and one time keys

4. What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?
Monero provides decentralized and trustless mixing. It doesn’t need to trust operators or masternodes. Monero´s ring signatures mix outputs and not transactions.

3. What are the stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches?
CryptoNotes is a technology that made the transaction untraceable (ZeroCoin, the sender will know when the receiver spends the utxo) and prevents double-spending(ZKP environment, someone will take advantage of the blinding ecosystem, using the fake tokens which not existed).

4. What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?
Ring Signature doesn´t need to mix their own utxos into other people´s UTXO.

  1. How many ‘core team’ members are there?
  • Originally, there were these six members: Riccardo “fluffypony” Spagni, luigi1111, NoodleDoodle, smooth, tacotime, Franciso “ArticMine” Cabañas. Recently, I’ve heard that fluffypony has moved onto the Tari project.
  1. What are the stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches?
  • Ring signatures have been around for longer than ZKP, so the vulnerabilities are largely found and fixed already.
  • ZKPs have something called RSA Private Key, which must be destroyed after initiation. If the key is compromised, the attacker could spend non-existent coins and nobody could notice.
  1. What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?
  • CoinJoins are centralized services that need to be trusted.
  • CoinJoin requires waiting for other transactions of the same denominations to be mixed with. Ring signature mixes outputs, not transactions, and arbitrary outputs can be produced anytime.

XMR’s ring signatures are also far more secure and convenient than CoinJoin because they mix outputs not transactions. This means a transaction doesn’t involve waiting around for other senders to mix with. Nor is a user restricted to mixing only if others are sending the same amount. Arbitrary amounts can be sent at any time without anyone else’s participation. This feature makes a timing analysis of the blockchain useless.

First posted on April 15 (Tax DAY) 2014, this Monero XMR announcement has now been read over 4 million times! 4, 630,423 times at last count!~. The announcement included seven core members, with an other probably meaning others et at…
The primary benefit over zerocoin or other KNP projects is the security provided by the Ring signature. This along with the fact that xmr will mix amounts, not transactions, makes it far more difficult mathematically to trace, if not actually impossible, With zero knowledge proof, there are issues with the master private key for activating the accumulator, the fact that this info from the reords matiching the accumulator must be destroyed, that zero knowlegde actually can obfuscate an entire economy, not just the senders receivers and amounts, and that it could more easily be taken over by bad actors, in that the seizure of control could go on unnoticed for a period of time before discovery. Most importantly, its advantage over coinjoin is that it mixes amounts not entire transactions

Ring signatures , which are used my XMR, have many peer-reviewed papers published over more than a decade, so its more trustable than the approaches used by ZeroCoin, which is more new.

4.decentralized and trustless mixing not dependent on masternodes. also outputs are mixed, not transactions, so you do not have to coordinate with other senders in time or amount.

  3. Ring signatures ahve been tried and tested, ZKP has not as it is a new technology. Zerocoin initiates an accumulator that first needs to be trusted before it is destroyed. Also, if the Zerocoin protocol is compromised there is no way of telling as the entire economy is obscured.

  4. You don’t have to trust an operator. You do not have to wait for other to mix their transactions with yours. You are not restricted to fixed amounts - any arbitrary amount can be used.

Additional question: The article mentions a concrete amount of 556.44 XMR that gets broken down into 500+50+6+0.4+0.04 denominations that then get mixed with denominations of the same value. My question is: do you provide a signature for each denomination (in this case 5) or just one signature for the amount as a whole?

I’m not entirely sure. But you sign a ring signature that groups public keys.

  • This is recent research-level cryptography. It is possible that exploids will appear in the long term.
  • Ring signatures are much simpler and more mature, with many peer-reviewed papers published over more than a decade.
  • Other issues with ZKP include the RSA private key used to initiate the accumulator, which must be trusted to be destroyed by the generating party.
  • It also obscures the entire economy, If the ZK system is compromised, then an attacker can continuously spend coins that don’t exist using false proofs.

4.)

  • The critical problem with mixing services is the need to trust the operators.
  • You have to trust the Nodes. In practice, a few VPS companies host the vast majority of nodes and this approach relies on the integrity and good behavior of these nodes.
  • XMR’s ring signatures are also far more secure and convenient than CoinJoin because they mix outputs not transactions. This means a transaction doesn’t involve waiting around for other senders to mix with. This feature makes a timing analysis of the blockchain useless.
