I am looking for suggestions for a nice user interface wallet to keep offline on a hard-drive, securely for vast amount of cryptos, something that generates private keys between devices maybe or keys are only on the hard-drive itself, something that i can trust. Thoughts on atomic wallet.?
For “vast amounts of crypto” I would suggest a hardware wallet like Trezor or Ledger, etc. I have a couple of Ledger Nano’s and the Ledger Live interface is OK. It also works on mobile.
Is the Ledger live interface just a download.? I am looking to install on a external hard-drive and just disconnect it till i actually decide to use my cryptos later on.
Yes. It is software that you download and install. Your private key exists only on the Ledger Nano usb key and not on your computer so you would not need to install the software on an external hard drive at all. The hardware key, ie Legder Nano USB stick, is equivalent to having your private key stored on an external removable hard drive but better. I hope that makes sense.
It sure does, i was trying to keep it on a external hard-drive rather than on a small USB that is easy to misplace or have someone just walk by and pick it up without notice although I’m not to concerned about that but it has always been easier to keep up with the hard-drives where I’ve missed placed USBs in the past.
Yes I know what you mean. The Ledger Nano’s require an 8 digit pin to be entered on the device itself to unlock them before they can be used. You also have the 12 word backup phrase to fall back on as well.
As @bisks already suggested, I would go either with a ledger or trezor. They have been here for a long time and are considered the most secure option. I wouldn’t suggest overcomplicating the security. Using any good hardware wallet, such as ledger or trezor is perfectly fine. People sometime use multiple just in case.
Here are some good videos from Andreas:
Yeah i just realized that last night, i went ahead and downloaded to check it out and found that i couldn’t really do anything unless I ordered a device. I will more than likely just order one but do want to make sure i order one from a trusted source also generate new keys to use.
Yeah it does sound like the best option to use. I’ve always been so picky and never have trusted anything i have looked up ( Just the type of person i am ), so i have just kept everything spread out till something I feel conformable with comes along. I have seen and heard about the ledgers the most outta the years and more recent adoption to user interfaces, it just sounds like the winner. It would just be nice to get everything organized in one place and get it offline.
Just FYI - When you plug in a Ledger for the first time, it checks to make sure the device is authentic and hasn’t been compromised.
I’d recommend just buying it from their website directly, regardless.
Most definitely have been looking towards buying from the website directly. I have heard about ledgers being compromised but I didn’t know that it checked to see if it was authentic, Nice. Thanks for that bit of info.
