Any thoughts on Gimli?

Anyone have any thoughts on Gimli?

I’m quite undecided on this coin. Their tech looks average but they look to have good Business Development abilities getting all those streamers involved. I’m pretty afraid they get regulated and clamped down due to anti-gambling laws.

Has anyone checked out the project? Any thoughts?

Gimli definitely looks cool. There’s so many betting focused crypto companies. But I like their focus on betting on real time eSports while streaming the event itself. That’s cool. It could become twitch for real time eSports betting. One risk is that Twitch could (and should) do this themselves. But they are big now and owned by a large corporation so if they did would likely be too slow to catch up with a well-implemented version of this idea that is starting now. eSports is going to just keep growing and we know people like to bet, so this is def interesting to me.

Hero coin is interesting but I do think it does something else. From what I understand, they basically allow, you to organize and bet on pretty much any match. On the other hand, Gimli seems to be primarily a streamer driven thing where the streamer acts as the oracle of information going into the blockchain.

Do I think a single coin can do both? Probably, yes. Is there space for both? Probably, yes too. I’m mainly confused by the state of Gimli and whether to actually back the project or not :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Disclaimer, I’ve invested in it.

In this sea of whitepaper ICOs (raising money with just an idea in a pdf), Gimli manages to bring a token with real use, a legit preview of the upcoming app, and a “team” of great advisors in the esports world. From hero coin to skin coin and what else is out there, these guys chose to support Gimli.

And betting on esports is not only a long term. Have you watched any gaming streaming recently? I’m always amazed by the amount of money people are donating. These guys aren’t afraid to put their paypal in twitch or hitbox. They will embrace the token use right away.

Very good points and also big parts of the reason why I’m very tempted to invest in it myself. The flip side of what you are saying is that there are 1 maybe 2 platforms of note for streaming and if they don’t allow betting on those platforms, this coin is pretty much a stillborn. Whereas in the case of Hero or even 1st, there is less of a single source they can shut down.

With that said, I do agree largely with the potential of the coin. I think I’ll put a little into the ICO.

I’m a big fan of Augur from the direction of utilising prediction markets. Can you please explain how betting coins like Gimli are different from Augur?

I also love Augur … I think most betting coins are no where close to the development and tech that Augur has with a acesption for First Blood with there Steam integration and focus on gaming …

The platform Gimli offers looks interesting but I do not really understand why it needs a seperate token? These platforms should be build on existing tech like Augur and use this … making there own coin looks to me if they are riding the hype train … What new fetures Gimli offers that Augur does not already do better?

Augur is clearly the winner in its field, no doubt. But Gimli isn’t only about betting. It’s gathering the gaming streaming engagement in one place.

It doesn’t even depend on Twitch or any other streaming platform. It provides a widget for streamers. So, you, as a viewer can use the same account to interact regardless the platform. And let’s be real, we all have favorites across channels (not only in gaming, in any domain.) Gimli provides that. Plus, you’re not only betting, donating too, and impacting streamers DECISIONS in real time. How fun is that? I think it adds new ways of entertainment.

Plus, streamers are used to have multiple widgets, plugins, windows all over the screen just to get some extra bucks. The adoption won’t be a problem. From there, it depends to viewers to prefer it over the native built-in way.

I do not understand why a project like this needs a token? What is the use of a token in this case?

If you go on that road, more than 90% of projects don’t need their own token. But here they are making new highs. It’s a platform, makes sense to go on this road and not depend on other services.

I agree that it could probably use one of the existing coins like Augur or even Eth itself but I also do think its a bit of a fine line to ask whether this needs a token. Many projects dont and to be fair GIM probably doesn’t either. The only use case that sounds like it might need a coin is 1) the fact that they intend to sell the coin themselves eventually and 2) the fact that the streamers will receive some kind of fees for facilitating that interaction.

To be fair, these 2 things don’t need their own tokens. But personally I do think that tokens serve many uses, one type of tokens are functional tokens another type (in this case) are some kind of ecosystem tokens. Just like how you need Riot Points (RP) to buy League of Legends champions, or diamonds to buy boosts in other games, I think its fair that a company wants to generate its own tokens for the sake of building their own ecosystem. It allows them to sell the tokens in creative ways and lock people into the ecosystem, which is good for the dapp in the long run.

I am very cautious about this one.

First, they are sitting at the convergence two sets of fluid and jurisdictionally complex activities - Crypto and Gambling. Just one is already a minefield, both is potentially a disaster. Given that they’ve used the name and likeness of a copyright character, I assume without permission, it seems unlikely that they have made a thorough study of these issues though I say that without any specific knowledge.

This one scares me.

Interesting. I’m going to take a look into Augur. I use to work in the gambling industry. I like the concept of Wagerr, but it’s early days with no test net yet and a largely unproven team.
