Activity Lesson 1

Describe a barter transaction that you’ve been a part either as a child or adult.
List the two items in the barter transaction and, looking back, did you think it was a fair exchange and why?

One of the most memorable barter deals I made as a child was trading my old and used moped for someone’s old and used PS1 with some game CD’s that were horribly scratched. This must have been around 2000 or 2002 or there abouts. At the time It was the trade that I wanted, since as many kids I was hopelessly addicted to video games. Looking back at at it I feel that it was a somewhat fair exchange, since the comparable value of both of these items against fiat money would be rather similar.

"When old men decided to barter young men for pride and profit, the transaction was called war.’'

I used to trade Pokémon cards with friends. I got a lot of old cards from my cousin and I wanted the new shiny level ex cards. So i gave several old cards in exchange for one new shiny level ex card. Looking back at it, I didn’t do a good job. Those old cards could have been worth thousands of dollars today, comparing to the (near to) worthless cards I have now.

Bartering in my early life was a daily activity. I often traded football cards, candy, skateboards, bicycles, etc. My favorite trade was a He-man figure for a Voltron Black Lion. I’ll never forget it; truth be told it still makes me happy thinking about it. We were both excited as we each had what the other truly wanted and despite a price difference at the time, the character we desired was worth so much more respectively to each of us. Trading brought value to both our lives.

  1. Trading sports cards or pokemon cards. It was very common to trade this type of card in school, sometimes I got 3 cards for one that was probably unique so we as a community decide if it was fair trade or not. It was part of the negotiation as a kid.

I was into BMX bikes as a kid, my friends and I would trade parts. I traded an old set of brakes one time for a bigger front sprocket. It meant more cranking power and faster acceleration, definitely worth it!

When I was a kid I used to collect albums of superhero cards and at school I used to barter with my friends the cards I had for others that I didn’t have and my friends did the same. The elements of the barter were the cards and I think it was a fair exchange because we did it by establishing the value of 1 to 1 in each card we exchanged.

Value is determined depending on useability, time and effort. If i dont need an item, keeping with me doesn’t make sense. Barter system is mutual understanding between parties and made sense when we had only few. When too many parties and goods are involved determination of values becomes tough.

Haha this is a fun one! Thinking back as a child I remember trading alot of things with my sister. I remember when we would play with our barbie dolls and before we would get started we would trade barbie clothes or furnature. It wasn’t always a one for one trade. Sometimes we might trade two dresses for a barbie bed. We would trade as many things to equal the value of another.

A really simple barter as children, me and my sister would trade candy. I would trade a more favored bar (snickers) for a couple not so favored (in another’s view, ex. three musketeers). It was a fair trade in my view because I got bars of chocolate that I still liked in higher number. She had to make the trade of a snickers bar worth it. Cute and simple.

Once when I was camping close to the ocean, there was a hairdresser that accepted fish in exchange for a haircut. I thought it was a fair exchange, because the amount of fish, if sold for dollars, was lower than the price of the haircut (in dollars). But it was even better because getting the fish was fun, it didn’t feel like work. But for the people that didn’t like fishing, dollars was the only other option and without that option they couldn’t get a haircut.

I can thank of a few. First one that comes to mind is when we go camping, I am not very good at setting up, starting a fire and keeping it at a steady blaze. My friend the Eagle Scout handles that as long as I go out and find wood and split it and brush to keep him loaded up.
