Activity Lesson 1

As a kid I used to trade panini world cup stickers. The goal was to complete your sticker album but some of the teams/players were more especial than others, so sometimes I would trade two stickers to get specific one in exchange.

And the exchange was not always fair.

I recall as a child bartering and trading hockey cards, baseball cards, and comic books with friends. The exchanges weren’t always fair, but I knew how to come out on top and make deals that worked in my favour.

The barter trade I remember was when stationery pads were a thing in the 1990s. lol. Different designs and levels of fragrance. All my trades with childhood friends I believe were fair as I wouldn’t accept low-quality stationeries in exchange for my thick, fancy ones.

  1. video game
  2. bicycle

The video game was fair since we exchanged them after we get enough playing so it saved both parties money.

The bicycle was definitely not fair since its usually done to benefit one party ( the one who liked the bike and convinced the other party to exchange for no real reason)

Describe a barter transaction that you’ve been a part either as a child or adult.
List the two items in the barter transaction and, looking back, did you think it was a fair exchange and why?

I used to exchange toy cars for Lego pieces. It was pretty fair, Legos and Hotwheels have a lot of value.

I had a friend help me on my families farm doing some work. He didn’t want any payment so I gave him fresh eggs and veggies from the farm in exchange for his time. It was a good trade because the work was outside of my scope and he got free food out of the deal

That sounds a lot like taxation.

The barter exchange that stands out the most to me, at least at the moment, is from when I was either eight or nine years old. My cousin and I each had a Gameboy Advance. He offered to trade his for mine. I knew no better and thus, seeing no difference between the two(after all, they were the exact same product), I thoughtlessly accepted the trade. I hardly even thought about it again until perhaps six months later when mine(the one I traded for) ceased to function. Was it a fair trade? Well, that may depend upon the definition. I wasn’t promised that what I had received would continue to function into perpetuity, and i raised no objection to the trade. I may have had buyer’s remorse, but technically speaking, the trade was fair.

I traded a cellphone for a digital camera back in 5th grade. I think it was a fair exchange, because their market price was relatively similar.

I remember trading playstation 2 games with my friends after we completed or got bored of certain games. Trading games would usually happen at a 1:1 rate since we both weren’t really incentivised to flip the games into a profit. In the end I don’t think I own any of my own original PS2 games anymore.

As a child we would exchange cards. It was fair as we would exchange cards that we already have multiple times

I personally have been a part of many bartering transactions as i am a barber by trade. I have traded lawn mowers for haircuts as well as cleaning services to name two. I believe bartering is useful in many but nt all transaction types. I like to use it when it saves myself time in the long run.

A barter I have been a part of as an adult was to trade babysitting for a friend with dog sitting. Looking back, it was a fair exchange as it gave her and her husband a weekend away and for us free kenneling when we needed it.

The closest thing to barter that I did as a child that comes to mind would be Kinder Suprise toys that you would typically find inside of a chocolate egg. When I had a few of the same kind I would trade one of them for the one I didn’t have. Seamed like a fair trade to me

When I was really young I traded one of my Atari video games for my friend’s action figure. My dad was not happy when he found out because the game was clearly more expensive than the action figure. But I was happy because I’d already played the game and didn’t care about it anymore.

In primary school I traded a small wooden model of a boat I made by myself for the small Mabuchi electric motor. I was satisfied with the trade because I could easily make another boat but not the electric motor.

I remember trading Transformers, they where toy robots. I had Megatron my friend had Optumus Prime, that was a good trade. They probably would be worth something now since they are not like the plastic junk of today.

We used to trade Hockey cards as well as bus tickets. It worked out well initially but once most of the people had the hockey cards they wanted it got more difficult to make the trade.

We do this all the time… I will do something I am good at (time) for exchange for something that I need done (time). This is the simplest example…

I actively have to barter with my toddler. I use candy and she preforms tasks. ie- getting her hair brushed or putting her shoes on herself. Defiantly would be considered a fair trade as trying to brush her hair ptherwise can be overly exhausting.
