Activity Lesson 1

In school exchanging a food that was packed for me in my lunchbox. I would have had a tuna sandwich day and my friend would offer to exchange a Nutella sandwich since I liked what he had and he liked what I had. I felt it was a fair exchange since we both got something we wanted and were satisfied afterwards.

As a young teen, I traded a little used BMX bike for a fairly equal skateboard. My step brother was overseeing the deal, something he seemed to enjoy and did well. I feel it was a good trade for all parties.

I recently barter traded a friend for bicycle parts. As I am on a budget I didn’t want to go into bill money to pay for a rear derailleur so I traded an extra nice quality bicycle seat for a derailleur he wasn’t using.

I think it was a fair exchange. Hard to put an exact price on either item but it was really about satisfying each others spending / need levels. He got a great seat that I was happy to let go of and I got a part I needed for my bike to continue riding.

When I was younger, I often traded random sides at lunch for somebodies milk that way I could have 2. To this day I see it as a fair trade only do to the wants being equal on both sides and not the actual value of the products. (I just really love milk and still do)

Well a few years ago I was a pharmacist on duty in a small village and I helped the market owner’s father with medicine. From that time, I have got free goods from the market (despite I wanted to pay), so for me it was a pretty fair exchange.

Also when I was a child, I traded with basketball and dragon ball cards. Sometime I made good deals, but of course I have made mistakes as well :).

My first memory about barter transactions was with World Cup 94 stickers from Panini, changing which I had repeated with my friends.

My childhood experience with Barter and Trade:

A more recent trade than childhood:

I within the last year traded a covered 20ft cargo trailer with 2 axles for a 35ft travel trailer.

I wanted to renovate the trailer and park it on some land to live a frugal lifestyle, I feel now that I should have just sold my trailer and invested the cash into crypto. More recently I sold he larger trailer for less than I could have sold the covered cargo trailer for, as trailer homes simply don’t retain value as they age. This is due to the service they perform and the materials used for construction. It is important to research and consider all your decisions before acting.

A barter transaction I took part in frequently was trading baseball cards growing up. It was always hard to tell what was “fair”, because we had to reference an outdated price book that denoted the value in dollars…which didn’t always have the cards we held and didn’t take into account any recent news.

There was one time that I was moving out of an apartment and into another apartment. My roommates from the old apartment were bad people and screwed over my ex landlord. I on the other hand always did my part and kept on good terms with the landlord. Once I moved out, he needed help at his distribution center. I helped him out for a day lifting boxes, moving furniture from one house to another. It was an interesting experience to be honest.

At the end of the day, he asked what I wanted for payment, I pointed to an extra air conditioner he had lying around at one of his aparments and I said, I want that AC! He agreed and I brought the AC home.

This was a great trade for both sides. First, me and this landlord still talk today and are on good terms. Second, it was summer and now I had an air conditioner which made my summer better. Also, I had that same AC for a few years after. Finally, the landlord got a day of work he needed done for an air conditioner. Everyone benefited.

I used to love to play Monopoly when I was young. A strategy was to trade away properties to get my hands on the purple and orange blocks to build houses and hotels on them. My strategy often times was to trade railroads and cash to get them. I typically was able to make a lot of $$ with those and then be able to take other blocks from those going bankrupt after landing on my purple and orange blocks.

Well like most of my fellow students here, i would have to take it back to school. I remember constantly trading merchandise, sweets, drinks and in later years i would even get a taste of commerce in school. Where i would get requests, deliver the goods and get what i required. Its quite a daily occurrence but nowadays its probably more about services than actual goods.

Although they were like items, as a kid I played with Matchbox cars as did all boys my age. As we would tire of our own cars, we would often trade them among one another. Even thought they were very similar, sometimes you wanted a sports car and sometimes you wanted a truck. I thought it was fair and definitely had value for future trades.

List the two items in the barter transaction and, looking back, did you think it was a fair exchange and why?

When i was a child we used to exchange a number of smaller marbles for one bigger marble. The bigger marbles had more "value"in the marble game, especially when it was a solid colour such as blue. The amount of smaller marbles that was needed for one bigger Marble was determined by the person who owns the bigger marble and who gave him the best “price” So it was a fair exchange based on supply and demand

I loved native American figures and hated matchboxes, so it was an easy barter as the matchboxes costed more money, but I got what is better value for me

The most memorable bartering exchanges as a kid were football cards and subbuteo football teams. We had a wee league and occasionally we would swap teams between us. Great times! :grinning:

I’m a massage therapist by trade and I’d often barter massage fur massage with another therapist. Sometimes it didn’t feel equitable because I felt I may have a higher skill level or they didn’t treat me well because no money exchanged hands.

When I was 7 I used to exchange Pokemon stickers with my friends and it was really amazing to get rid of the duplicates and obtain stickers that were difficult to get.

When I was a teenager in the 80s I used to trade music cassette tapes. When I was tired of listening to a tape I would trade it for a friend’s tape of a different band. Usually it was 1 tape against 1 tape. I guess the trading was fair and allowed us to listen to different music we liked without having to buy new tapes at the store.

As a child we bartered different types of marbles. Some marbles with a specific color, marking or size were considered more valuable than others. looking back the going ‘exchange rates’ were sometimes completely out of what where a particular colored marble was sometimes 100’s of smaller marbles.

The most vivid memory I have of a barter transaction I was a part of was with Pokemon cards, people would freely trade their doubles (cards they have duplicates of), I remember one time trading over 200 common cards for a Shiny Charizard card back in the day - my dad at the time went mad at me for doing so - looking back on it was a great deal as that same card I traded for today is the most expensive Pokemon card - sadly it has been lost in time :frowning: Always knew I had an eye for a bargin :stuck_out_tongue:
