  1. What was a proposed alternative to Segwit?

Increase of block size limit.

  1. What did Segwit solve more than just the scaling issue?

It fixes malleability issue as signatures are no more part of the block.

  1. How is Segwit and the Lightning network connected?

The Segwit, by fixing malleability issue, enable the lightning network to use tx id to payment channel.

  1. Are people, wallets and other services forced to use Segwit?

No because it is a softfork, it is compatible with old protocol.

  1. To make the block size bigger.

  2. It prevented it from altering the transaction id.

  3. It made it possible to build a layer 2 on top because some smaller transaction are done off the block and will be added when the users are ready.

  4. No it was a soft fork.

1.proposed alternative was raising block size

  1. it solved TxID malleability, allowing easier deployment of lightning network

  2. made second layer, lightning network possible.

  3. soft fork, old addresses and transactions can still be used.

  1. What was a proposed alternative to Segwit?
To increase the block size with a hard fork.

  2. What did Segwit solve more than just the scaling issue?
It solved transaction malleabillity by separating the signature data from the transaction data.

  3. How is Segwit and the Lightning network connected?
    Segwit made lightning possible.

  4. Are people, wallets and other services forced to use Segwit?
No, because it’s a soft fork, and they still not all do. Actual adoption fluctuates around 50%.

What did Segwit solve more than just the scaling issue?

Segregated the witness (signature) data from the middle of the block to the end, separating this data from the transactions cleared 60% block volume resulting in an (new) effective block size little under 4mB.
It kept the new block size without witness data under 1mB, and thus acceptance with legacy nodes.
Segwit created the option for layer-2 solutions like Lightning.
It fixed transaction mallaebility

How is Segwit and the Lightning network connected?

2nd-layer Lightning is optimized for transaction speed and lower fees, and Segwit makes this possible.

Are people, wallets and other services forced to use Segwit?

No. They will still be able to make transactions with witness data if they choose to do so.

  1. A proposed alternative to SegWit was to increase the BTC Block size from 1MB to 2MB.

  2. Segwit solved not only scaling issues but also transaction malleability. The potential malleability flaw was to do with the signature (ScripSig) where this could be edited to change the TX ID.

  3. Incorporating SegWit would allow for second layer protocols to be used like the Lightning network.

  4. No one was forced to use the SegWit as it isn’t a hard fork. Although it makes sense to adopt the SegWit update to enable faster transactions and lower transaction fees because this would allow the continuation of mass adoption for the currency.

  4. No they are not. It was a soft fork.

  1. What was a proposed alternative to Segwit?
To increase the block size like Bitcoin cash does.
  2. What did Segwit solve more than just the scaling issue?
The problems that come with the malleability of the block by altering the signature.
  3. How is Segwit and the Lightning network connected?
The lightning network boosts bitcoin transactions by taking frequent small transactions off chain.
  4. Are people, wallets and other services forced to use Segwit?
Wallets had to add Segwit. It is happening step by step.

  1. The proposed alternative to segwit is to increase the maximum block size.

  2. Segwit also solved the problem of transaction malleability.

  3. Fixing the transaction malleability problem allow the development of second layer protocols, like the lightning network, by making it less risky and easier to design any feature that relied on unconfirmed transactions.

  4. No, segwit is a soft fork so the network can continue without being 100% updated.

  1. What was a proposed alternative to Segwit?
An increased in the block size on the network.

  2. What did Segwit solve more than just the scaling issue?
It prevented people taking advantage of the transaction malleability bug.

  3. How is Segwit and the Lightning network connected?
The lightning network allows for greater space on the blockchain as smaller and more frequent transactions happen off chain to be added later.

  4. Are people, wallets and other services forced to use Segwit?
No, segwit is a soft fork, and thus does not require full adoption in order to be integrated into the chain.

1. What was a proposed alternative to Segwit?
The proposed alternative was an increase in blocksize from the 1MB limit.

2. What did Segwit solve more than just the scaling issue?
SegWit solved the problem of block sizing effectively. It also solved the problem of transaction malleability by making it so that even if the signature is now changed it does not affect the initial transaction.

3. How is Segwit and the Lightning network connected?
SegWit was also to allow for second layer solutions to become a viable option in the network.

4. Are people, wallets and other services forced to use Segwit?
No, it is not a forced updated however it is a soft fork therefore falls under the previous protocol also.
