Monero CCS - Reading Assignment

  1. Who decides when a project moves from ‘Ideas’ to ‘Funding Required’?
    Monero community/core team

  2. Which ‘Completed Task’ had the highest budget? What was the USD value (at the time, hint: read the proposal) and how many contributors were there?
    RandomX Audits, 1400 XMR.
At the time this was around $118,000.

  3. What’s the current USD value of all ‘Work in Progress’?
    Around $190,000 USD

  4. Choose one project from ‘Work in Progress’ and write a short summary of the work being done and how it supports the Monero ecosystem.
v1docq47: video creation / translations into russian (february - july 2020)
The person behind this proposal is working to translate resources about Monero into the Russian language. I checked out her youtube page- it’s full of high quality voiceovers of presentations from MoneroKon 2019, wallet tutorials, etc. This seems like a really great service to drive adoption of Monero in Russia.

The community discusses the pros and cons; however, the Core Team determines if the community reached a loose consensus.

2. Which ‘Completed Task’ had the highest budget? What was the USD value (at the time, hint: read the proposal) and how many contributors were there?
The ‘Completed Task’ with the highest budget was RandomX for 1,400 XMR. At the time, this equated to about $118,000. A total of 40 contributors worked on the project.

3. What’s the current USD value of all ‘Work in Progress’?
The current USD value of all ‘Work in Progress’ is $187,029.36 (3,096 XMR * $60.41).

4. Choose one project from ‘Work in Progress’ and write a short summary of the work being done and how it supports the Monero ecosystem.
I looked through a few before landing on “GUI UX coding (3 months).” The work that’s already been done by these devs focus on the GUI. Further improvements they’d like to make are tor/i2p integration, Android/Pruism support, and many other small projects therein. The tor/i2p integration with GUI would allow users greater control of their privacy while using said tor/i2p; moreover, since Monero already has support from the software, it should be reflected in the GUI. Purism already has shown interest in having a Monero GUI natively; further, this would go a long way toward using their Librem phones (and Android phones) for crypto transactions. Thus, encouraging more users to join the Monero ecosystem and increase its use-case.

The core team makes that decision after a “loose consensus” was reached in the community.

It was a proposal called “RandomX Audits” with 40 contributers. The total USD Value was aroun 118k.

2798 XMR = 172.000 USD

“VPS funding for reproducible builds” by “TheCharlatan”.
He wants monero to have reproducible builds, so that nobody can sneak malicious code into it and everybody can verify their monero installation (via checksum). Anyone who compiles the source code should get the exact same binaries. To my (very limited) understanding, one of the problems is that not all external dependencies are compiled from scratch.

Project: GUI UX coding (3 months)
Summary: manpower to work on the Montero GUI (Graphical User Interface). Basically to enhance the user experience of the GUI, fix bugs and add new features.
How it supports the Monero ecosystem: It will make more user friendly, so more people can use it with less friction, less complexity, more functionalities and better integration with other systems (like Tor).

  4. “v1docq47: video creation / translations into russian (february - july 2020)”. This work consists of making Monero websites, wallets, videos, guides, etc, available in the Russian language. This will increase the ability of Russian language speakers to understand Monero blockchain and its ecosystem, to transact in XMR, to store it, and to mine it. Increasing the number of users/nodes/miners increases adoption and makes Monero’s decentralization and security more robust.

4.Project: Broadcast Transactions over Tor Hidden Service
The project aims to add support to Monero daemon for broadcasting new transactions received over RPC to privacy preserving p2p connections to conceal origin IP. This proposal will use Tor hidden services, but the implementation will be written such that additional anonymity networks (Kovri?) can be added in the future.

  1. The community gives feedback and critique. The Core Team determined when the community reached loose consenus and then funding beings. So in my opinion the community but the Core Team has also a small impact on the decision.

  3. The current USD value of all "Work in Progess is around $ 207.580 (3160 XMR)!

  4. GUI UX coding (3 months): Monero integrated support for tor/i2p. The Monero GUI should now implement this, so that other users can use this new function easily and userfriendly. Purism wants a Monero GUI natively and included in their Limbrem 5 (phone). Also a wish for an Android GUI release should be fulfilled. Furthermore the current GUI should be improved in terms of update checker and popups. Furthermore, he wants to implement a user testing session GUI feedback, integrate the Monero GUI guide, improvement of tooltips and context menus, support for moneroseed, CMake build recipe and misc. GUI development.
All in all he wants to improve the GUI and makes it more userfriendly. Furthermore he wants to develop other GUI for Android to make the access to Monero easier so that not only “techy” people will and can use Monero and also to support the mass adoption of Monero

The proposal is to carry-out research into completing a protocol for executing atomic swaps between Monero and Bitcoin. The author proposes to use the ECDSA (Elliptical Curve Digital Signature Algorithm) to make the protocol complete and implementable without needing hash pre-image zero knowledge proofs. If successful, this would help support the Monero ecosystem by making it more accessible to holders of other cryptocurrencies who cannot, or will not, obtain Monero through conventional exchanges.
