What are the stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches? | The stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches are that they have not been tested and exploits could emerge later down, as well as the fact that the ring signatures are more simple and mature.
-
What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches? | the stated benefits over coinjoin based approaches are that Monero uses bitcoin protocol to use new cryptography to provide superior mixing, as well as the fact that it removes the need to trust the operators of the service, as well as the fact that it does not use master nodes or any of the processes that master nodes imply, providing higher anonymity, as well as monero’s ring signatures being far more secure and convenient.

ring signatures that monero uses are simpler and could be called mature cryptography while ZK is more prone to attacks as it was still unexplored fields.

Monero relies on well studied cryptography with years of research. ZKP was still very new at the time, and because of the ‘zero-knowledge’ aspect of ZKP someone could find bugs / weaknesses, and no-one would find out.
-
The protocol handles the matching with other transactions, rather than users needing to arrange it themselves or wait for other people.

2.)There are 7 core team members.
3.)The stated benefits over zero coin and ZKP-based approaches are ring signatures and one time keys.
4.)The stated benefits over coinjoin based approaches is that it zk systems mix outputs and not transactions. So you do not have to wait around for someone else to make make same size transaction size to be anonymous. Instead it mixes everyone regardless of the transactions sum size.

- “XMR’s ring signatures are also far more secure and convenient than CoinJoin because they mix outputs not transactions. This means a transaction doesn’t involve waiting around for other senders to mix with. Nor is a user restricted to mixing only if others are sending the same amount. Arbitrary amounts can be sent at any time without anyone else’s participation. This feature makes a timing analysis of the blockchain useless.”

XMR will use one time keys and ring signatures to enhance privacy.

XMR mixes outputs instead of txs. You can execute a tx without waiting for other users to mix in and can be send in any amt without waiting for participation. Users are also not limited to mixing with other users who are sending the exact same amt.

- What are the stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches?
The technology is based on proven and reliable encryption technology. ZKP is a newer technology that did not pass the test of time yet, so exploits are more plausible. Also, Monero splits the problem of hidding the sender and receiver into two separate solutions. With ZKP there is a risk the network was corrupted by false transactions. But since the whole network is obfuscated, it is more difficult to audit by the community.
- What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?
Since UTXO are grouped, not the transactions, it is way more easier and quicker to build a secured and anonymous transaction. Also, with Monero no centralized party is needed for mixing. There is also less incentive for a node to spy on the activity since a random node is selected, making the probability to hit a malicious node less likely.

What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?
no reliance on 3rd parties for trust and security.

- Two of the main features of CryptoNote are ring signatures that mask sender identities by mixing and one-time keys that make transactions unlinkable.
- Unlike the “CoinJoin” mixing method, CryptoNote mixes outputs not transactions, which means no other senders need to be participating with you at the same time or with the same amounts.

- What are the stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches?
- Ring signatures that mask sender identities by mixing
- One-time keys that make transactions unlinkable
- What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?
- Unlike CoinJoin, which mixes transactions, Monero mixes outputs. This means that no other senders need to participate at the same time or with the same amounts.
- The degree of anonymity is also a choice, rather than decided by the protocol.

- ZeroCoin utilizes recent research-level cryptography that could be broken later down the line. Also you must trust the generating party of the RSA private key used to destroy it. It’s also not visible to see if the system has been compromised.
- XMR uses new cryptography to provide decentralized and trustless mixing. Also XMR doesn’t rely on Masternodes that rely on good faith. Plus you don’t have to wait for other transactions to mix with because it is done on the outputs.
- When was the thread published, and how many times has it been read? 4.6 mil times

- What are the stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches? — lack of recent cryptanalysis that may enable exploits later on, as well as requiring trusting destruction of RSA private key by generating party or else an attack may spend coins that don’t exist using false proofs.
- What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches? — Cryptonote mixes outputs, not transactions, meaning no other senders need to participate in the mix. Any arbitrary amount sent at any time will be fundamentally indistinguishable. Doesn’t rely on masternodes.

What are the stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches?
- ring signatures (mask sender and receiver by mixing the outputs)
- one-time key that makes TXs unlinkable
- ZKP is still new and unexplored enough technology. If the initiative key is compromized it destroys not only the TXs involved but the whole economy
-
What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?
- in CryptoNote (XMR) the output instead of transactions are mixed
- TX outputs are mixed from any time, which makes time analysis useless
- no masternodes or centralized mixer are needed

The ZK environment allows an anonymity set that includes everyone in the network because the validity of an output can be proven without knowing the corresponding public key until it is spent. The benefit is a larger anonymity set.
-
By mixing outputs instead of transactions, a transaction doesn’t involve waiting around for other senders to mix with. Nor is a user restricted to mixing only if others are sending the same amount. Arbitrary amounts can be sent at any time without anyone else’s participation. This feature makes a timing analysis of the blockchain useless.
Monero Announcement - Reading Assignment
- When was the thread published, and how many times has it been read?
A. April 25, 2014, 12:38:50 AM
- How many ‘core team’ members are there?
A. There are 5+ listed on the bitcointalk thread.
- What are the stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches?
A. More cryptanalysis has been logged over the years for one-time keys and ring signatures than so for the ZK environment. ZKP have maximal anonymity, yet are subject to attacks which can occur and not be diagnosed in a timely manner. I believe XVG may have had something similar to this occur recently.
- What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?
A. Providing a decentralized and trustless mixing of superior quality is of greater benefit than mixing services.
