1 - When was the thread published, and how many times has it been read?

The thread was published on April 25, 2014, 12:38:50 AM. I think as of today it has been critiqued, 41544 times across 2078 pages.

2 - How many ‘core team’ members are there?

The official core team members are the following:
- Riccardo “fluffypony” Spagni,
- luigi1111
- NoodleDoodle
- smooth
- tacotime
- Franciso “ArticMine” Cabañas

3 - What are the stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches?

CryptoNote/Monero XMR reduces the level of anonymity it provides by offering a different balance through the dual layers of privacy provided by one-time keys and ring signatures.

4 - What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?

CryptoNote/Monero XMR uses more recent cryptography to provide decentralized and trustless mixing of higher quality. It’s more fundamental cryptographic approach doesn’t have these vulnerabilities and the quality of anonymity is much higher. Monero’s ring signatures are also far more secure and convenient than CoinJoin because they mix outputs not transactions. This means a transaction doesn’t involve waiting around for other senders to mix with. Nor is a user restricted to mixing only if others are sending the same amount. Arbitrary amounts can be sent at any time without anyone else’s participation. This feature makes a timing analysis of the blockchain useless.

  2. How many ‘core team’ members are there?
    7 and some more…

  3. What are the stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches?
    Ring signatures and statekeys

  4. What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?
Ring signatures mix the outputs, not the signatures so you don have to wait for other signers, makes it more efficient.

• Proven matured cryptographic over a long enough period of time & one time keys.
• XMR mixes outputs not transactions, it is trustless as it uses random nodes to process the Tx.

  4. XMR mixes outputs instead of transactions. Thanks to the ring signatures a user can send any amount at any time without waiting for other participants as in the case of CoinJoin.

  2. There are 7 core team members

  3. The stated benefits are that Ring Signatures are simpler and more aged. There are more peer reviewed papers published over a decade or more. And also one time keys.

  4. The benefits stated here over a CoinJoin-based approach are that as this moves away from the Bitcoin protocol this allows Monero to use new cryptography which enable a decentralized, trustless mixing of greater quality and also less time. XMR also mixes outputs instead of transactions. Due to is cryptographic approach is that a VPS company may act in bad faith unlike a randomly selected node so anonymity is higher.

The XMR thread was published on April, 25th 2015, appareantly it was read over 4 million times :open_mouth:

#2 - How many ‘core team’ members are there?
There are approximately 7+ core team members

#3 - What are the stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches?
More mature cryptography algorithm, no need to trust the accumulator to destroy the RSA keys

#4 - What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?
More convenience, no trust in third parties needed

  1. What are the stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches?

Ring signatures used in XMR are much simpler and more mature than zero-knowledge proofs (ZKP), with many peer-reviewed papers published over more than a decade. ZKP include the RSA private key used to initiate the accumulator, which must be trusted to be destroyed by the generating party. ZKP also obscures the entire economy, not just sender/receiver identities so if the ZK system is compromised, an attacker in theory can continuously spend coins that don’t exist using false proofs and it’s not possible to know if this is happening or if the network has already been compromised. CryptoNote has different approach to balance between inherent risks and the maximal anonymity set through the dual layers of privacy provided by one-time keys and ring signatures.

  1. What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?

XMR is more qualitatively similar to mixing implementations like CoinJoin. The differences arise in the departure from the Bitcoin protocol, which allows XMR to use new cryptography to provide decentralized and trustless mixing of superior quality. In case of Darkcoin (now Dash) a few VPS companies host the vast majority of nodes and this approach relies on the integrity and good behavior of these nodes. XMR’s more fundamental cryptographic approach doesn’t have these vulnerabilities and the quality of anonymity is much higher.

„XMR’s ring signatures are also far more secure and convenient than CoinJoin because they mix outputs not transactions. This means a transaction doesn’t involve waiting around for other senders to mix with. Nor is a user restricted to mixing only if others are sending the same amount. Arbitrary amounts can be sent at any time without anyone else’s participation. This feature makes a timing analysis of the blockchain useless.“

  3. Better system implementation via Ring Signature approach.
  4. Only outputs are mixed, not transactions. This eliminates the need for various requirements (amount, timing etc.) to be inherent.

  3. ZeroCoin is based on zero-knowledge proof cryptography which is a cutting-edge technology that was not reviewed for possible flaws in detail by crypto-analysts. It also requires a trusted ceremony of private key creation. Don’t understand how is it hold, but every participant has to destroy his part of info (probably seed?) in order for this process to be secure. Or at least one of the participants need to destroy it and it would be enough to be secure… Moreover, this ceremony should be conducted on every hard-fork. If ZeroCoin system is compromised then nobody would notice the damage.
  4. The main difference is that Monero obfuscates outputs, not transactions. Thus, it does not require participants of transaction to be online to sign it. Monero does not require other participants at all. It split any amount of coins on some rounded parts like 56.45 = 50 + 5 + 1 + 0.4 + 0.05 then looks for other outputs with 50, 5, 1, 0.4, 0.05 denominations and mix them so observer will not be able to understand the destination of original outputs.

Monero mixes outputs rather than transactions, as such your not restricted to mixing with people who send the exact same amount. You can send an arbitrary amounts without the participation of others.

  2. There are seven core team members.

  3. The stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches are that ring signatures are more mature and much simpler, with many peer-reviewed papers published about them, so they are less likely to have an exploitation in them. Trust is also required of the generating party in zero-knowledge proofs to destroy the RSA private key used to initiate the accumulator - and there is no guarantee they are trust-worthy. Also, zero-knowledge proofs obscure the whole transaction economy, not just the sender and receiver’s identities, so if the system is compromised the attacker can continuously spend coins that don’t exist using false proofs, without others seeing.

  4. The stated benefits over CoinJoin based approaches are; a) that there is no need to trust the mixing operators, and b) because ring signatures mix outputs rather than transactions there is no waiting for other senders to mix with and no requirement to mix with other transactions of the same amount.

re: #3 you’re on the right track, but you’re thinking of Zcash!

Because nothing is ever easy, zerocoin, Zcoin, zerocash and Zcash all mean different things :man_facepalming: You’ll learn more in the next unit. Besides that, your answer is correct.
