Activity Lesson 1

Hey there! I definitely was a huge Pokemon card trader as a kid, I used to scalp the flea markets for decent but not super rare cards and use them on unknowing children for better cards. Probably was a little skeezy but i wanted to catch them all, and doubling up on a few decent cards for one really good pokemon seemed reasonable to me, even at 9/10 years old.

What about physical work? I remember in the school cafeteria we put all the chairs on the tables, and then we could grab unlimited cakes in the kitchen. :cookie: :cookie: :cookie: So: time, energy and freedom traded for food.
Furthermore, I remember we traded common marbles for rare marbles which we then kept at home in a bottle Wow. Gresham’s Law that is!

At school we would have these fundraisers where they gave you a box of different chocolate bars that all sold for $1. I noticed that the caramel ones sold out first every year, so I traded w everyone whatever they wanted so I could get just about every caramel bar. And then sold them for $2 each.

I was playing in my band and I had my Squier Stratocaster electric guitar, but for our music style I needed an Epiphone Les Paul Standard, which is a bit more expensive.
I found a person who was willing to trade his Les Paul (second hand but looking beautifully) for my Squier plus little extra money. I accepted and until now I think it was a pretty good barter as I still keep my Les Paul back at home and it kept rising in value and I still love it. That’s the barter I can quickly remember but I’m sure I did more in the past.

When was a child with my grandfather which had a lot of vines , me and him doing barter with our grapes for potateos . Was a fair barter because his cost with the grapes was low , he worked for the vines unaided and in that area where he made the exchange the potatoes was very cheap also but the grapes very expensive and obvious he receive much more potatoes for less grapes.

When I was a kid until my teen years we would exchange different toys and items with friends. We all decided it was a fair trade since we both wanted the thing that the other one has.

To this day I still barter with my sister about which chores I will take care of and what she will do. For example, I would do the laundry and she would do the dishes.

This example for me would be fair because I like doing the laundry more than washing dishes.

I had a lead role in a micro low budget independent film. I worked for free bartering my labor for clips I could use for an acting demo reel. The two items in the barter exchange was my free labor and acting demo reel clips. The barter exchange wasn’t worth it because I spent the entire summer working on something I could never use in an acting demo reel. The problem was there was nothing in the film that I could use in my acting demo reel due to the low production quality of the film.

When we were kids my friends and I would let each other borrow each others video games. Although it was not an outright sale of a good for another, it was similar to a rent or a lease in exchange for a product of close to equal value. This was as fair as an exchange as I can imagine when it comes to bartering. We both benefited because we did not have to pay the cost of buying the games ourselves.

Once I lost one of my friend’s expensive calculator which I could never afford. To solve the problem, I offered him doing his homework and help him to pass his math exam. He did not settle with it and asked me to do his English homework and help him to pass his Science exam without fail guarantee as well . It was a tough negotiation but good experience for exchanging goods for services. At the end the perceived value of the items for each party were very high so both party were very glad with the outcome for his side.

I think the best barter transaction I am still part of takes place every weekend. When I meet with my friends and where someone pays for the others knowing that the favor will be returned the following day or the following weekend. It’s not exactly trading one thing for another, but it is paying for something (food, activities, drinks, etc) knowing you will be “paid” back the favor in some other way with the same "currency (food, drinks, activities, etc)

in primary school we used to trade marbles and football cards. The rarest would command a higher number of cards or marbles in exchange.

I don’t remember bartering for anything as child or adult. All exchanges I’ve ever had in my life involved cash or credit.

Describe a barter transaction that you’ve been a part either as a child or adult.
List the two items in the barter transaction and, looking back, did you think it was a fair exchange and why?

As a child and teenager, barter was more common because I did not have money readily available. The first barter experience I can remember was baseball cards. We would find out which cards the other person did not have and then make an offer, trying to get cards I did not have. It was effective, except some cards were harder to get than others. As a teen, I remember trading albums and clothing. It also was effective, and fair exchanges.

I used barter as a child, but also as adult. Because I organize club events I have possibility to give away some tickets, or some guestlist places. Thats why I did kind of agreement with my hairdresser, that she takes care of my hair and as compensation would be tickets to my events. It works quite fine, until corona came and all events are shuted down  But it works good, I liked it.

Like many here I traded some Pokémon cards as a child. Value was very arbitrary and personal. Most of the time the rarity of the cards was the biggest factor.

I did get ripped off when I bought my first pack. Not knowing a lot about Pokémon, people got me to trade a a very common Pokémon and energy cards with more rare cards. Definitely wasn’t a fair exchange.
