Activity Lesson 1

as a kid I traded transformer action figures with an other kid I met at the beach. Some time later I found out that it wasn’t fair at all because my figures were part of a set that was rare.i completely misjudged the value of my stuff:)

I remember I was trading pokemon cards as a child. One trade was not fair but it was my fault, because I traded one valuable card for many unvaluable cards. Later I found out those cards combined didn’t have such value as that one valuable card I gave away. I was horrible businessman back then  But I took it as a lesson.

Love the question! As a child I once swapped my playstation with my sister for her Game Boy Color for 1 week. I was happy because I didn’t have the game boy so it was fair in my mind at the time. However, the playstation certainly had more value so perhaps my sister came out on top of our bartered transaction!

the last transaction I can think of as barter is that I helped a friend move house…not during Lockdown of course  and was given a few drinks and a meal as compensation. I offered my time and effort in return for food and drink.
They got the better end of the deal in this exchange but between friends you don’t really look and gaining financially over them.

Before I got clean & sober, drugs were the ultimate money. I could swap drugs for literally anything, from food in someones fridge to the car on their lawn. But of course this only worked with either drug addicts or dealers, so it was somewhat of a closed system to outsiders. And of course it was very dangerous - I don’t recommend this to anyone!! I myself got clean & started studying blockchain to fill my time in, and fyi I’m loving it!!

The most memorable and in my eyes profitable barter trade was one that I made in primary school. Back when ‘Backugan’, a collectible trading card game similar to Pokemon, was at its peak in popularity I traded two Backugan pieces for a fully functioning Nintendo DS. From that point on I was able to play multiplayer Nintendo with my brothers and I think I still have the DS somewhere. The other remaining Backugan I recall giving away for free a bit later to my younger neighbor, because I no longer cared for them, all in all a great deal for me.

I have bartered with someone very recently. I enjoy growing plants especially good fruits or medicinal varieties. One of my friends that came over one day saw the fruit tree I had and said “I would love to have one of those trees one day” and I told him I had so many graphed trees that were starting to grow and i would gladly trade for a cutting of his bamboo trees.

The 2 items in the barter transaction are a graphed fruit tree and a cutting of a bamboo tree.

I think I got a very fair exchange because the bamboo tree was a rare variety that was later mass produced as well. I think my friend thinks he get the better end of the deal because he got a tree that will produce fruit the very next season. So we both got out with a trade with thought was fare and both were happy with the results.

I recently exchanged some marijuana for some hash oil. It was a fair trade, we each got a relatively equal amount when measured in USD

It was school lunches. It always depended on each of the participates desire, which usually turns out well.

As a kid I played with marbles with friends at school. There were several ways of playing but one version we did was to create a small crater, place equal amount of marbles inside the crater, and then we threw bigger marbles inside to get as many marbles outside as possible. Those who landed outside you would win and keep. And the bigger, nicer ones was the attractive ones that you would try and win from your opponent. I remember trading either a few small ones to get a medium or a big sized marble so I could continue playing if I had stacked up a lot of small marbles, or I traded back a bigger one that I didn’t like that much (if it had been damaged for example) for small or medium glass balls to give my friends a chance to continue playing.
Looking back I think these trades was mostly fair and honorable, but of course sometimes we got greedy and wouldn’t settle if we knew we had an upper hand against the other trader.

I only remember exchanging Christmas chocolates I didnt like for those ones that I liked with my brother. So I guess it was a pretty fair exhange for both of us

I gave my friend some beers, he gave me his wisdom. It was a fair trade, with the surplus of a good time. As for my childhood, trading cards would be the most accurate memory, with the scarcity of some “hard to get cards” increasing their value regarding the “easy to get ones”

Describe a barter transaction that you’ve been a part either as a child or adult.
List the two items in the barter transaction and, looking back, did you think it was a fair exchange and why?

As a child I would collect Tea Cards. They where collectible cards with images on the front and description behind, and existed in different sets. Some where more scarce than others, and as kids we would barter and trade with one another. This scarce one is so many easy to find cards.
At the moment it was a fair trade between equals, only determined by offer and demand.

In high school, I made a barter transaction with my friend we exchange vinyl records. I think this transaction was fair because we exchanged LPs of the same band.

I would still use the barter system to this day if it is an option. The last barter system I did was pressure wash a house in exchange for logo development. At the time I could not use design programs and it cost me a day in labor and in return I got about an 800 dollar value for logo design. This was 8 years ago.

When I was a kid I borrowed my sister’s bike to go to work. While at work someone took it upon themselves to barter with me about my sister’s bike without asking me and left a real piece of junk in its place. Because my sister’s bike was never found I had to buy her a new bike and was stuck riding the really junky bike to work. To this day I still think that was an unfair barter.

I remember trading many bad pokemon cards when i was a child for one shiny one, and many countless other trades with pokemon cards. Some of the trades were more fair than others. Any trade with my brother ended with me holding the short end of the stick.

In childhood it sounds funny, but it felt legit and was satisfied at the time:

  1. Traded my collectibles of 3d holograph stickers for a WWE cards bundle.
  2. Traded my chess game for Batminton Racket.

It was fair exchange as both parties agreed to do so without any second thoughts and transaction was satisfactory and both parties are happy after that.

I used to trade Pokemon cards and Magic The Gathering cards as a child. Looking back, some were fair but then others were totally arbitrary.

I work with audio and sound recording, and a friend of mine is a plumber. In return for recording his band’s demo, he has come to fix my backed up slower drain. We exchanged one service for another with no intermediate exchange of representation, only service for service. I find this to be 100% fair based on the fact that it’s echanging one skill for another skill that each of us has learned.
