Activity Lesson 1

As a kid, I once exchanged my compendium of board games for a classmate’s Lego Technic remote-controlled stunt car. He wasn’t at all mechanical minded, while I was besotted with everything Technics at the time. I felt I had the better deal because the Lego set was almost new, and my board games weren’t! Looking back, my opinion remains the same (I still have the stunt car!) I’m not quite so sure how the exchange panned out for my friend over time.

Few year ago me and my wife barter 1kg bananas for alphabet floor mat for a child. Bananas got eaten but the kid learned his first numbers and letters. Good deal in my opinion.

When I was a kid my father and I built a fence around our yard (it was a pentagonal-shaped back yard). We accidentally encroached on a neighbors property at the apex of the pentagonal shape by 1-2 inches. The neighbor called our attention to it. My father immediately recognized his error. In the end my father gave the neighbor for free a small fishing boat we had in our backyard with trailer included - I think it was a fair trade and the neighbor seemed happy with it.

When I was about 19yrs old I traded a complete (but all in parts) Ford Winsor V8 351 drag racing engine (fast eng. 11.5secs dwn the quarter mile) that I was planning on fitting into my XC GS Rally pack ute. The exchange I received for this engine was 2 x 40oz bottles of my favourite alcohol at the time (Rum) and 2 x oz’s of “happy backi.”

At the time I was focused on living life of chasing girls and avoiding emotional pain, thus the quick fix of drugs and alcohol. The assembled 302 Windsor engine was probably worth about $5k and the exchange goods $1k. Not a fair exchange…but I accepted the terms… :worried:

Finally, the most painful reality was when I was at a party 3mths later and this same individual I traded with, drove his immaculate Dark Green XY GTHO in with what used to be my engine…looked and sounded sweet…gathered much onlooking attention from all…I secretly slipped away to a dark place on the property to have a good proper cry and left not long after that…OH the PAIN…the PAIN!!! :sob: …to this day I’ve never seen him or the car?..LOL… :joy:

Beer for yard work which worked for me!

When I was a child I bartered with one of my friends a holographic Gengar Pokemon card I had for his Jynx that he had. Solely because his card had boobs on it. It was definitively not a fair exchange because even though they were both Pokemon cards, the holographic Gengar card was and still is much more valuable.

Trading cards, exchanging toys or sports equipment

  1. Exchange board game for a deck of cards. It was a fair exchange because the two parties had a desire to have one of the above items.

Well just today I traded my roommate a smoke in exchange for a chocolate bar :stuck_out_tongue: It may not have been a fair exchange but I left happy because the chocolate bar was worth more than the smoke.

when i was a kid there was a hype in collectional items found in the "lays " crisps packs , that was a kind of marketing you never knew what kind of item is in the pack as the items had the same shape and weight , some of them came not as often as others and there was lots of situations where we needed only 1 item to have the entire collection so we bartered lots of new items for a 1 old scratchy item that we did nod had a throwback with images of what i am talking about
was it fair ? of course not , but that is a perfect example of how a parameter like rarity is increasing the price

When I was a kid, it would have been marbles. The more colours, or perceived “beauty” of the marble, the more standard marbles got swapped for it.
Nowadays, it is plants from seeds or cuttings with my next door neighbour!

Some years ago, my friend had a stereo system and exchanged it for a better one and some money.
The upgrade for me was good and for him it was getting a smaller system to fit his room.
When my company was running, we needed furniture and exchanged some desks for some cubicles…
Office space is expensive and we needed to put more people in the same space so it was great for us and them since the desks we bartered them were really good quality.

Scholastic book challenge at school. Read and summarize 3 books a month to get a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut in Elementary School. I was smart enough to realize that the book was already summarized on the back cover. Book summarizes x 3 = Free pizza and Soda. (That’s a fair exchange.)

I remember a sticker album that I had for the 1994 soccer World Cup as a child. I would exchange my repeated stickers for stickers I didn’t have so I could fill the album. I believe it was fair because the trade was sticker for sticker, the only difference was the subjective value of the stickers to each person according to what they had or didn’t have.

I traded my lovely cap for a $0.25 cinema ticket. The value of the cap was 0.75 dollar. I did this because I badly wanted to watch the movie but I did not have the money. That was a poor deal monetary but sentimentally it was worth it.

I remember back in the day as a child trading various Pokemon cards, some where very rare and kids would offer lots of worthless cards to get them. I also remember trading packed lunches for different things. It seemed fair at the time! haha

My parents once made a deal with me saying that they would buy me a playstation in exchange for getting good grades. Good grades = proof of work. Playstation seemed like a good reward at the time for that.

When I was a child I traded my $3000 car audio system for a set of magnesium alloy rims for my car. The rims were worth about $4000, but did not come with tires. So I ended up having to spend $800 for new tires. In the end, I felt I was a fair trade, I LOVED my rims; I went so far as to cut the springs on my ‘91 civic hatchback to drop the car as low as possible. It was quite a bouncy ride! I eventually got another car audio system and after that I was living the dream.

I took part in a barter transaction between me and a friend. My cd’s for his aquarium. Was a good deal for both of us at the time.

I have not done any barter transaction.
